The Best Living Books for Your Homeschool

The Best Living Books for Your Homeschool

Are you looking to curate a happy, connected family with a Christian worldview through your homeschooling?

Over 26 years of homeschooling and 7 years of creating resources for the Peaceful Press I've read or listened to hundreds of books with my children and we've shared them with you through our book lists.

Each of these booklists correspond with our award winning homeschool curriculum and reading these books aloud to your children will spark joy and hope in your family.

But first, if you are just getting started with understanding the Charlotte Mason philosophy, here are a few great books to create a foundation.

1. "Home Education" by Charlotte Mason

What better place to start than with the works of the woman who pioneered this educational philosophy? "Home Education" is the first volume in Charlotte Mason's six-volume series on education. In this book, Mason lays out the principles and practices of her method, providing a solid foundation for your homeschooling journey.

2. "For the Children's Sake" by Susan Schaeffer Macaulay

Susan Schaeffer Macaulay, daughter of renowned theologian Francis Schaeffer, explores the Charlotte Mason approach in a modern context. "For the Children's Sake" is a beautiful introduction to the philosophy and practical implementation of Charlotte Mason's ideas. Macaulay's personal anecdotes and insights make this book a must-read for any homeschooling parent.

3. "The Living Page" by Laurie Bestvater

If you're looking to dive deeper into the art of narration and notebooking, "The Living Page" is the perfect resource. Bestvater explores the importance of meaningful and personal connections to knowledge through the use of notebooks. This book will inspire you to create beautiful and engaging records of your children's learning experiences.

4. "In Vital Harmony" by Karen Glass

If you want an overview of the basic 20 principles of a Charlotte Mason education, this approachable book lays it out in a systematic way that will empower you with confidence as you embark on a living education. This is one of my favorite Charlotte Mason education resources.

5. "Parents and Children" by Charlotte Mason

In this volume of her series, Charlotte Mason explores the relationship between parents and children and the role of parents in their children's education. "Parents and Children" provides valuable insights into the importance of connection and communication within the homeschooling journey.

6. "A Charlotte Mason Companion" by Karen Andreola

Karen Andreola's "A Charlotte Mason Companion" is a comprehensive guide to implementing the Charlotte Mason method in your homeschool. This book covers everything from the philosophy behind the method to practical tips for daily lessons. It's a valuable resource for both new and experienced homeschooling parents.
