Handling Homeschool Interruptions

Handling Homeschool Interruptions

Getting started with a new homeschool year offers so much promise, but inevitably we face days where the baby won't nap, or siblings get in a fight, or we have to pause the homeschool to put the goat away (ask me how I know).

However, we don't have to be discouraged about these interruptions, or worry about learning loss, because life is part of the learning.

As you take the time to investigate aloud why the baby won't nap, or work through conflict with the siblings, or track down the case of the escaping goat, your children are still learning.

Deuteronomy 6 tells us to teach our children as we rise up, and walk on the way, and lie down, and homeschooling isn't just happening when you are all sitting cheerfully at the table working on your notebook pages.

It's also happening while you care for little ones (and talk about loving the helpless) and break up fights (and talk about loving our enemies) and put away the goat.

So just roll with it. Laugh at the interruptions, and don't take each day too seriously. Your children are always learning, and your attitude about the day, and the way you guide them through it with peace, is a better teacher than any workbook page, any day
A few more thoughts on handling interruptions-

If interruptions are tears over the school workload, you might need to back off a bit.

If interruptions are physical fights between young boys, they might need more sensory input. Try doing large motor activities from the Peaceful Press early years before sitting down for school.

If interruptions are in the shape of your phone, keep a notebook and pen on the school table to write down a list of the things you will look up after school.

If interruptions are toddlers, do a Peaceful Preschool or Restoration Home activity with them before starting your big kid morning time. Add cuddles for greater effect.
