Do you have a child who is struggling to learn to read? These holiday themed reading activities can help!
- Make holiday place cards. Cut paper in the shape of Christmas trees or turkeys, color them, and help your child copy the names of family members who will be joining you.
- Do a holiday word find. Print a poem from the Holiday Book Flood and call out words or letters for your child to find. For instance, circle all the letter “c”. or circle all the places you see the word “bells”
- Room labeling game. Write Holiday themed words and have your child match them to items in the room. Start with simple words like “gift”, “tree”, “plant”, etc.
- Christmas movement game. Print the Christmas movement cards from Christmas Guide Volume 1 and have your child act out Christmas themed movements like, “prance like a reindeer” or “roll like a snowball”.
- Make a Christmas bucket list. Write down activities you want to do this Christmas together. Let your child invent their own spelling, and then sneak the words into copywork or dictation later in the week.
- Make a Christmas gift list. You can check out our gift lists here and have your child copy items that look fun to them.
- Match Christmas Compound Words. Print the Christmas compound word printable from Christmas Guide Volume 2 , cut them out and let your child match them up. You can also write words like “evergreen”, “mistletoe”, and “pinecone” on index cards, cut them into two words, and let your child sound them out and put the words together.
- Christmas Word Hop. Print the Nativity words from the Christmas Guide Volume 1. Let your child sound out the words (help as needed) and take a hop forward for each word they get.
- Nativity Storytelling. Use the Nativity word cards again and tell the Christmas story together.
- Read Christmas stories together. Your children will be more motivated to learn to read if they are enjoying reading with you, so cook up some hot cocoa, cuddle on the couch and read one of these beautiful stories together.
