Creating a Connected Christmas: Intentional Traditions for Homeschooling Families

The holiday season will be here before we know it. What do you want your children to remember this holiday season?

Having an intentional, connected Christmas as a homeschooling family can create lasting memories and deepen family bonds.

Sometimes the hustle and bustle of the holiday season does not feel merry and bright. We encourage you to slow down and find the meaning of joy and peace with your family this Christmas.

Here’s how to plan it in a meaningful way:

1. Create a family advent calendar. Our Holiday Book Flood is a 25 day picture book advent that includes something to read, something to do, something to make, something to see, and/or something to listen to. This guide is perfect for the whole family! It includes 25 cards that can be hung as an advent banner and suggests 25 books you could wrap for a daily surprise, along with engaging activiites to create a wonder-filled holiday season. Check out the Holiday Book Flood booklist here.

2. Focus on faith. Unearthing Wonder: A Family Advent Guide is a 25 day Christmas devotional guide to accompany the book All Creation Waits by Gayle Boss. Unearthing Wonder includes scripture, songs and simple activities for your family to focus on the Gospel this holiday season.

3. Make homemade gifts. Spend time making gifts together. This blog post has homemade gift ideas like rolled beeswax candles and essential oil bath salts.

4. Incorporate Christmas stories into your lessons. You can check out the best loved stories in our Holiday Book Flood here or use one of our four week Christmas Guides.

5. Make space for connection. Set aside time for meaningful conversation with your family. Ask children intentional questions like what Christmas means to them, or what they're grateful for, or what their favorite holiday traditions are.

6. Outdoor adventures. Go on winter nature walks, enjoy Christmas light displays, or take time to be outside together as a family.

7. Cook and bake together. All of our Christmas guides include yummy treats to make with your family. This blog post includes our favorite rolled sugar cookie recipe.

8. Give time for rest and reflection. Avoid overscheduling, and allow time for everyone to rest, reflect, and appreciate the quiet moments of the holiday season. Make a list of your family favorite Christmas movies to watch together or create a scrapbook of family holiday memories.

What others have to say about The Peaceful Press resources:
"We have LOVED all the Peaceful Press resources we’ve used (Peaceful Preschool, Autumn and Christmas guide volumes 1 and 2 and the summer NNK collection). We just started NNK and my 5 year old, tag-along 2 year old and I have been loving all the activities and books in the Tree unit! We’ll be doing the All Creation Waits this Advent. I’ve also loved and learned so much from your two books and podcast. Thank you so much for all the work you put into creating such beautiful resources that have helped me connect with my five-year old. Peaceful Press has been an immense blessing and I love telling others about it!"
